Enhancing kinesthetic interaction in VR
Locomotion in virtual environments is essential for exploring vast virtual spaces for gaming, training, simulators, and other interactive applications. Many different VR locomotion taxonomies were presented but the optimality of the presented methods rely on factors such as available space, cost, and content of the VR experience. This talk mainly focuses on design and evaluation of a seated VR locomotion method. The seated posture favours the use of the locomotion interface in confined spaces. It can also enable users with certain physical hindrances to utilize body-based interaction methods for VR locomotion. Our method uses foot-tapping (plantar/dorsi-flexion) gestures to create realistic walking experience and applies kinesthetic feedback to haptically render different types of walking terrains. We evaluate the ease of learning locomotion gestures, control of locomotion speed and distinguishability of different terrain structures.
